Aperture of the lens

2024-04-23

In addition to the focal length, the aperture is another main parameter to distinguish the difference between the lens, which determines the amount of light in the lens. The size of the aperture directly affects the shutter speed and depth of field, so when shooting night scenes and portrait, when the focal length is equal, we prefer to use a large aperture lens.
A lens has a maximum aperture and a minimum aperture, we are generally concerned about the maximum aperture, the minimum aperture is not so important. The smaller the number, the larger the aperture, f/2.8 aperture is smaller than f/1.8 aperture. Generally speaking, the lens of the same brand, in the case of equal focal length, the larger the aperture, the higher the lens grade, the more expensive the price.
For zoom lens, there is also a concept called whether the aperture is fixed, which actually means whether the maximum aperture value is fixed from the wide-angle end to the telephoto end. Note: Fixed aperture lens does not mean that the aperture of the lens can not be changed. The price of fixed aperture lens is generally higher, and the non fixed aperture lens is less difficult to manufacture and the cost is lower.
When shooting, the telephoto end requires a higher shutter speed than the wide-angle end, so generally speaking, the photographer uses a non-fixed aperture lens to shoot at the telephoto end. The fixed aperture lens can also maintain the same maximum aperture as the wide-angle end at the telephoto end, so the scope of application is wider, and it can have a higher shutter speed and a shallower depth of field at the same telephoto end. Generally speaking, if the focal length of the two zoom lenses is the same, the price of a fixed aperture lens is higher than that of a non-fixed aperture lens.
